Data Center Consolidation: The Great Myths

Putting up big and great data centers use to be every company’s dream. The companies would then showcase these data centers to boast about their grasp on technologies. However, this was a synopsis of the past and does not hold true in today’s scenario. Today, the companies looking for smaller and more effecient data centers and therefore, most of the companies are getting started with data center consolidation.
Even though it is good that most of the companies are rushing to do data center consolidation, but majority of them are unaware of the true potential of data center consolidation. Majority of the companies carry a set of perceptions, which we can simply call myths. Let’s look at some of them that I can think right away and write here.

  • It all about saving money.
  • Consolidation means reducing the number of servers. Rest everything can stay where it is.
  • Why repeat it? We did consolidation a few years back and now we are fine.
  • We consolidated our applications by migrating them to newer servers.
  • We have shut down a few servers and that’s how we consolidated.
  • Consolidation applies only to the large enterprises. We are not that big right now.

This is not the end of the list. There are more myths that are carried over for many years. You must break the myths and understand the real potential that is hidden behind data center consolidation.
