Three quick ways to speed up your system…

Most often users complain that their system with some exceptional good configuration is slow. Well, it is not the fault of your system, but it is just you have not taken good care of your system. There are many ways in which you can tune up the health of your system but to start with, here are three quick ways that will ensure your system is in a healthy state.

  • Run msconfig to fine tune the start up. The msconfig utility is meant to do many a things, such as parameter changes in boot.ini and enable/disable applications in the startup. First thing you must do is disable all applications that are not required at the time of startup. Most of the time, you will find applications like MSN Messenger, Adobe Reader etc. More applications you enable in the startup, slower your system is going to become. Therefore, keep the absolute necessary ones here and disable the remaining. You can start the msconfig utility by typing msconfig in the Start – Run dialog box.
  • Run Disk Cleanup to clean out temporary files. When you start this tool, you need to select a drive and then select what you want to clean out from your system. For instance, you will be able to clean temporary Internet files, Microsoft Error Reporting Temporary Files, Recycle Bin, compressed old files and so on. This tool, after selecting options, will be able to tell you the space it frees up from your system. You can start this tool from Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Disk Cleanup.
  • Run Disk Defragmenter to bring disks back into normal state. When you read and write data on to the disks of your system, they are written in small blocks. Your system tries to write the data into continuous blocks but if continuous blocks are not available, then the data is written in scattered manner across multiple blocks. This process is known as fragmentation, which increases the access time to a file when you try to access it. Higher the fragmentation, more slower your system is going to be. Therefore, regularly defrag your system to ensure good health and speed of your system. It can be started from Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools -Disk Defragmenter.

These are universal methods that can get applied to Windows XP, Windows Vista, and even Windows 7. Even if your system is in good health at present, make sure you perform these tasks to ensure it stays healthy.

These tasks really keep the PC in good shape. I run CCleaner once a week and defrag with Diskeeper09. It totally automatic and can be set to run in realtime, the best defragger I have tried. No need to defrag manually or schedule tasks.
