PortableApps: Carry and Use
Ever wished that you could carry a few applications with you and could use the same set of applications on different systems? Well, then don’t be surprised. Here is something that is going to come handy for you. The applications that can be moved around as per your need are known as portable applications. These applications, as and when required, can be ported from one system to another system so that you do not need to re-install them.
PortableApps.com brought out PortableApps Suite that consists of many handy applications. The set of applications contains Web browser, OpenOffice suite, games, and options from your system’s Start menu.
When you download the installer from PortableApps.com, you need to first install the application into a folder of your choice. Because this set of application needs to be ported to different systems, it would be recommended that you extract it in a USB drive. When you extract the installer, or install it rather, there are a number of folders and files that are created in the specified folder.
The folders that are extracted are Documents and PortableApps. The Documents folder is designed to store music, videos, and pictures, just the way they are stored in your system on a Windows Vista or Windows 7. The PortableApps folder stores the portable applications that are attached to the menu being displayed below.

What more…there are tons of features that are part of this portable application suite. The figure above displays various numbers that are labeled with each set of features.
1. Displays the types of files that you can save into their respective folders. These folders are part of the Documents folder that we read about just a minute back.
2. Helps you explore the folders that are available on the system. When you click on this, it directly shows the content of the system drive, which is C: drive in most cases.
3. Displays the Drive letter where you have copied (or installed) PortableApps. It also shows the free space on the drive along with the drive size.
4. Displays the complete set of applications that are part of the PortableApps suite. Applications include PDF reader, Sodoku, OpenOffice suite, Mozilla applications, and so on.
5. Allows you to backup and restore your files and folders by using the Backup option. If you want to customize PortableApps, then click Options. This will allow you to configure different languages, font size, install new portable applications, and so on.
6. Allows you to minimize or close the PortableApps suite.
With all these features that are power packed into a small utility (even though its installation folder size is in a few hundred megabytes), you can carry it around and use them at your convenience. You can download them from the following location:
