Piriform Defraggler: Defrag your system

Fragmentation is one of the biggest reason that causes the systems to slow down. To ensure good health of the system, you need to ensure that you defrag the disks that are attached on the system on regular basis. Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 have inbuilt defraggers. You can use them for defragging the disks, which may include the hard disk or USB drives.

Piriform offers a free defragment utility that is extremely quick, good, effective, and more than anything it is free. It performs a deep analysis of the attached disks and shows the percentage of the fragmentation that the disk has (here disk would have partitions as well). Defraggler displays a list of all the partitions that you may have on the disk and then the fragmentation on each partition. Here is a graphic that shows how the utility looks like:

The Defraggler is split into two sections: top and bottom. The top section displays the number of partitions that you have in the system. It also displays the USB drives that you may have connected to the system. Below the top section, you will see a section with blocks with different colors, which indicate fragmentation/defragmentation in a specific partition.

The bottom section displays three tabs:

  • Drive <selected drive lettere> – Displays the fragmentation status on the selected partition. It displays the total number of fragmented files along with the percentage of fragmentation on the partition. On the right hand side of this tab, the amount of free and used space on the partition is displayed.
  • File List – Displays the number of files that have fragments in the selected partition.
  • Search – Displays a number of search parameters based on size or file name/path.
