Office 2010 and Shareporint 2007: The Issue – Missing “path to file”

18 Dec

Office 2010 works fine with the exception of a few bugs – something that is obvious feature of any beta product. Microsoft has designed it to works with a number of applications but there has been some key issues when it co-exists with their products, something like Sharepoint 2007. Without using Office 2010 suite, you are able to check-in or check-out files but when you attempt to use MS Word or MS Excel to directly check-out files, there is “Could not open “path to file”" error. MS Word or MS Excel are unable to track files from the Sharepoint server.

To resolve this issue, you might want to do a workaround til Microsoft actually comes back and resolves this issue in the final version of Office 2010. Here is a little work around that can be done:

  1. Open up Internet Explorer
  2. Click Tools –> Internet Options –> Connections tab
  3. Click the LAN settings
  4. Check “Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections).”
  5. Enter 127.0.0.1 for the address
  6. Click Advanced
  7. In the Exceptions type: *.*
  8. Click OK, OK, and OK (three times) to close all dialog boxes.

This should allow you to open the documents from Sharepoint 2007.

Do not do this. This is a huge security risk.
This forces Internet Explorer to assume that every website you visit is “Trusted” and therefore allows unsafe things to happen!

It also breaks things, like Tungle. An alternative that worked for me was disabling automatic proxy detection. Thanks for the post!

I saw your website via msn the other day and absolutely liked it so much. Carry on the good work.

Well, I have this issue with Powerpoint files and tried some others workarounds (like map a drive to portal, access through UNC or configure File Type to use Internet Explorer to open it). None of this solutions work out.

So I tried something that works fine, it’s not a solution but is still a workaround. Follow this steps (I did that for Powerpoint files but mabe you can try for other Office files if you have the same problem):

    1. Access through UNC
    2. Select file and open its context menu
    3. Select “Open with..” and select Internet Explorer

You can bypass the UNC access using the Explorer View from the Sharepoint document librery.

I hope this post can be usefull
